The Candlelit Cosmos by Michelle Wilkinson, a girl and cat beside a candle beneath a luminous moon and violet-blue sky

The first evening you reach for a blanket can feel like the beginning of autumn at home. The curtains close a little earlier, the lamp goes on, and the chair beside it becomes somewhere you want to stay.

I don’t think that needs a whole new set of decorations. A few small changes can make a familiar room feel ready for longer evenings, without packing away everything that makes it yours.

I’m Michelle Wilkinson, the artist behind The Sleepy Easel, painting in Launceston, Cornwall. For me, autumn decorating begins with somewhere comfortable to sit and something on the wall worth looking at. Here are a few ways to bring that storybook feeling into your home.

Start with the corner you actually use

Before thinking about the whole room, choose one place where you spend time. It might be the end of the sofa, a chair beside the bookshelves or a small desk by the window.

Bring the things you reach for within easy distance: a reading lamp, a blanket and a place to put your cup. Try moving what you already have before buying anything new. A chair turned towards the room or a lamp borrowed from another corner can change how the space feels.

Leave enough room for ordinary life. The best autumn corner is somewhere you can put your feet up, not an arrangement you’re afraid to disturb.

Let a little light lead the eye

A pool of lamplight can make a room feel very different from one bright overhead light. Think about where you read or sit in the evening, and make sure the light works for that activity as well as the atmosphere.

That balance between a small light and a much larger night is part of The Candlelit Cosmos. A girl and a cat sit beneath a luminous moon, with a single candle glowing between them. Bare branches cross the violet-blue sky, and their silhouettes are reflected below.

I’d consider this print beside a reading chair or on a bedroom wall. Its portrait shape can suit a narrower space, while the little candle offers a warm detail within the cooler night colours. You don’t need to add real candles to echo the scene; a favourite lamp can be quite enough.

Autumn doesn’t have to be orange

If rust and pumpkin colours aren’t your favourites, there is no need to use them. Plum, indigo, cream and warm brown can give a room a different sort of autumn feeling.

Choose a colour from a picture you love and repeat it once, perhaps in a cushion or a blanket. Then leave the rest alone. A small thread between the artwork and the room is often more interesting than matching everything.

Texture can do some of the work, too. A woven throw beside smooth wood, or a soft cushion on a well-used chair, adds variety without filling every surface.

Keep a view of the outdoors after dusk

When the window becomes dark earlier, a landscape print offers another place for your eye to travel. It doesn’t have to show autumn leaves to belong in an autumn room.

In Moonlit Deer, two deer drink at the edge of a blue lake. Pine-covered shores lead towards dark mountains beneath a crescent moon, with small ripples around the deer’s lowered heads.

Its landscape format gives the scene space to open out. I’d try it above a low chest or sideboard, with warm wood nearby to sit alongside the indigo and blue. Keep the surrounding objects simple so the lake still has room to draw you in.

Choose art that can stay beyond the season

A picture doesn’t need to come down when autumn ends. Choose it because you enjoy the scene, then let the things around it change with the weather.

Before choosing a print size, mark out its dimensions on the wall with paper. Look from the doorway and from your usual seat. Allow for the frame’s outer dimensions, especially when placing it above furniture or between shelves.

The product pages for The Candlelit Cosmos and Moonlit Deer show the available sizes and framing choices. Check the selected option so you know whether you’re choosing a print on its own or a framed piece.

A room ready for an ordinary evening

You don’t need to create a perfect autumn scene. Make the chair comfortable, put the book within reach and leave somewhere for that cup of tea.

If you add a picture, choose the one you’d like to keep company with through the longer evenings: the girl and cat beneath the moon, or the deer beside the lake.

A home can feel ready for the season without looking as though everything arrived in the same shopping bag. Start with what you love, and make a little more room to enjoy it.
